Church of Agia Sofia | Drama

The Church of Agia Sophia in Drama is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. Its construction is placed in the 10th century, parallel to the construction of the city walls, using the same building materials. Architecturally, the temple belongs to the Byzantine architecture. During the period of Ottoman rule, the temple was converted into a Muslim mosque, known as the ‘Bay Mosque’. At that time, a vestibule was added on the west side, at a higher level than the main temple, and a minaret was erected, the base of which is the present bell tower.
