Palios Agios Athanasios

Agios Athanasios is a traditional hamlet that developed over the last few years, thanks to the neighbouring skiing resort of Mt. Voras (also known as Mt. Kaimaktsalan). It was built at an altitude of 1200 m. in the 16th century and hosted a flourishing animal raising community which was abandoned in the 1970s. The village’s stone houses, old and new, keep with local traditional architecture. At present, Agios Athanassios is considered the “Arachova” of Northern Greece and provides excellent tourist infrastructure (accommodation, restaurants, cafes) to visitors and skiers. Agios Athanasios retains its genuine local architectural heritage, with austere two-storey stone houses. More modern buildings have complied with the local architectural style and construction materials (stone and wood) of the traditional village. At winter, the fireplaces lit at local homes and guesthouses create an atmosphere of warmth and evoke nostalgic memories of snowy mountain villages.
