Park of Nymphopetra

Park of Nymphopetra

Following the highway from Thessaloniki to the east of the Lagadas County, the route leads to the road of the village of Nymphopetra (meaning nymph stone). Small and large stones scattered over a green field, with benches and lights, seeming to transform them during the night. According to the legends these stones were a group of people going to a wedding. However, the mother of the bride after forgetting the wedding ring, instead of going back home to get it, and because of her confusion, cursed the whole procession. As a result, all people present petrified for ever just outside the village. Those passers-by who do not believe the legend, witness the columns of salt formed by superheated jets of some kind of a geothermic fluid.
