Ancient Maroneia

From the foothills of mount Ismaros to the beach of Agios Charalambos, there are a number of scattered archaeological remains from Maroneia, one of the most important cities of Thrace both in ancient and Byzantine times. Maroneia was founded by settlers from Chios in the middle of the 7th century BC and grew into a strong and populous city that was preserved up until the Byzantine period. The fortifications of the classical city are 10 kilometres long and includes an area of 4,000 acres from the beach to the top of Ismaros.
