The construction of the Fort was completed in 1936, forming part of the “Metaxas Line”, a network of 21 forts along the border. Rupel, with a total length of 4,251 metres of galleries and 1,849 metres of shelters, is considered one of the largest and most powerful forts of the line. During World War II, in April 1941, Fort Rupel became a symbol of resistance, as Greek forces vigorously defended the fort against German attacks, delaying their advance. Today, Fort Rupel serves as a historical monument, open to the public. Visitors can tour the underground galleries and bunkers, see wartime exhibits and learn about the strategic importance of the fort through informative signs and guided tours.
