Monastery of Panagia Portaitissa | Kornofolia

South of Soufli village is the Kornofolia Convent, founded in the 17th century and dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. It is a dependency of the Iviron Monastery of Mount Athos to which it was ceded in 1756 by the Didimotiho Cathedral. A major pilgrimage in Thrace this historic convent was fully renovated in 1854 but suffered damages in 1913 by the Turkish army. The vaulted church with its beautiful iconostasis was built in 1857. The current monastic order of nuns still carries the convent’s long tradition of cultural and social beneficence with diligence and self-renunciation.
