Paleokastritsa Monastery

Perched on a hill above the famous beach, the Monastery of Paleokastritsa is one of the most popular attractions outside the city. It was built in 1228, however its current buildings date back to the 18th century. The church of the monastery is a basilica with several remarkable icons, mainly of Cretan style. First-time visitors are impressed by the beautiful views from many parts of the monastery, the stone-covered patio with wide arches and bougainvilleas and the small museum which, apart from relics and icons, hosts a whale bones too.
