Samarina

Samarina, that is “Santa Marina”, the most renowned shepherds village in Pindos, is built amphitheatrically on the northeastern slope of Mount Smolikas at an altitude of 1,450m, the highest village in Greece. Tradition has it that Ali Pasha had chosen Samarina for his summer vacation. On August 15 and 16, all the people from Samarina gather in the village to celebrate and dance together the historic dance “tsiatsos” danced in three rows (the young, the elderly, women) to the accompaniment of musical instruments, while the song that is heard describes the murder of Michos from Samarina.
