The National Vasilitsa Ski Centre is to the northwest of Grevena, 42 km from the town, lost in the pine-trees, beech-trees and other towering trees. The history of the ski resort starts in 1975, when some “romantic” inhabitants of Grevena proposed and achieved the construction of the first sliding lift at Botsia, with a length of 1,060m and with an altitude difference of 272m. The same lift still serves a large number of visitors today. The exceptional quality and quantity of the snow at the ski centre and “Egnatia Odos” motorway, “shortened” the distance of the mountain from the major urban centres. Thousands of visitors every season use the three sliding lifts, a two-seater and a three-seater, that raise the adrenaline along the 18 trails of the ski centre. Most of the Greek mountains can be seen on the horizon: to the southwest, to the direction of Ioannina, there is Gamila; further west, you can see Smolikas, Vitsi, Vorras, Vermio, Pieria, Olympus, Pilio, Parnassus, the Karpenisi mountains, Trigia, Koziakas, and finally the peaks of Avgo and Flegga of the Pindos mountain range. And after this wonderful feeling, go up to Samarina and Valia Kirna, the valley of the devil. On your way up, the small villages will offer some moments of rest, some tsipouro and meze or traditional jam, usually under the plane tree in the village square.
