Macedonian Tomb of Ancient Amphipolis

A new Macedonian tomb was excavated in 2006 in the area of Amphipolis: it has two chambers, a rectangular hall and a square main chamber, and a built, roofed “pathway”, a construction which is of a later date. The tomb was initially looted in Roman times, an event which happened again later according to the indications provided by the excavation. In the chamber were found two stone built-in sarcophagi and a stone chest (“kisti”). The blocks of stone in the hall that sealed the entrance to the monument in Antiquity were found fallen. At least six skeletons of adults and one of an infant aged up to 2.5 years were found. Prominent are a few golden funeral gifts that accidentally escaped the looters: a pair of gold earrings ending in a lion head, a golden danake, some sheets of gold and a group of jewel-caskets and perfume bottles.
