Monastery of Timios Prodromos

The Holy Monastery of Timios Prodromos of Serres, one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Greece, is located about 12 kilometres northeast of the town of Serres, in a green gorge of the Menikio Mountain. The monastery was founded in 1270 AD by Ioannikio. Despite the destruction it has suffered from time to time, it still retains its authentic Byzantine architecture and is a living museum of Byzantine art. The monastery’s katholikon is stone-built and decorated with Byzantine frescoes. The wood-carved iconostasis, dating from 1804, is a typical example of ecclesiastical wood-carving art. The monastery has been operating as a women’s convent since 1986 and is administratively under the jurisdiction of the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita.
