Monastery of Agios Stefanos | Meteora

The foundation of the monastery of Agios Stefanos dates back to the 12th century, but its establishment took place in the 14th century and was completed in the next two centuries. The first founder of the monastery is considered to be the abbot Antonios Kantakouzinos in the 15th century, while the monk Theophilos (1545) was the renovator of the old katholikon and the monastery in general. The present katholikon was built in 1798 in honour of Saint Charalambos and its hagiography is contemporary. The monastery has a female sisterhood with a remarkable spiritual and social contribution.
