Canyon of Aggitis

Between Paggeo and Menikio is situated the canyon of Aggitis, which has a length of 15 kilometres. Here was located the Gate of Hades, through which Pluto led Persephone into his own world. The narrow and deep valley the river crosses is called “Stena Petras” (Rock Pass) or “Dioryga” (Channel). It was created millions of years ago by violent geological upheavals because of which the land was divided in two, leaving the waters of the great lake that covered until then the plain of Drama flow into the sea. To get into the canyon one has to go at its beginning, in the village of Symvoli, or at its end, at Lefkothea. At “Vraous”, as the locals call it, there are caves inhabited by early people, cave paintings with human faces and animals, laurels, sycamores, willows, alders and wild poplar trees in combination with solid rocks that stand tall, all of which make the river Aggitis suitable for rafting.
