Drakolimni

Dracolimni is the most famous Alpine lake in Greece. It is located in a mountain meadow high in the Tymfi massif at an altitude of 2,050 meters – above the traditional village of Papingo, with breathtaking views of Tymfi’s main peaks and the valley of the Aoos River below. The lake covers an area of eight stremmas (two acres), and in its frigid, crystalline waters lives the Alpine newt, a small amphibian which resembles a lizard. This unique lake, closely associated with the local myth of dragons, is far too cold for even the most courageous swimmers.
