Lake of Aoos

The Aoos Springs Lake, 20 kilometres north-west of Metsovo, was created in the 1980s when dams were built to produce electricity for the area. It is the highest lake in Greece, at an altitude of 1,350 metres, with an uneven shoreline and tree-covered islets. The forestland around the Aoos Springs Lake includes black pine with a scattering of Bosnian pine, and one of the largest beech forests in Greece. In autumn, the amanita mushrooms that sprout under the auburn leaves of the beech trees are both delicious and especially beautiful.
