Mon Repos | Corfu city

This is a vast area of 258 acres of blooming gardens, the royal summer palace and ruins of ancient temples. Mon Repos- or Paleopolis- owes its uniqueness to the findings from the ancient city which had been founded in the region, but also to the summer residence of Mon Repos, which now serves as a museum. Mon Repos is a neoclassical mansion, with simple forms, built between 1828 and 1831, which served as a summer residence of the British Commissioners, and- later- the Greek royal family. The rare garden of the property includes about 2,000 species of plants. Apart from museum of Paleopolis, major attractions are the Doric temple of Kardaki- the best preserved ancient temple in Corfu-, the ruins of the temple of Hera and the monastery of St. Euphemia, which is the oldest convent in the island. The property, now under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Corfu, is open to the public, who can admire the archaeological remains but also mementos, furniture and costumes from the era of the British colonial rule. In summer the park operates as the “Rena Vlachopoulou” theatre.
