Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas | Meteora

The monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas owes its name to an old owner who founded the monastery in the 14th century. The monastery was renovated in the 16th century by the metropolitan of Larissa, Agios Dionysios the Eleimon, and the exarch of Stages, hieromonk Nikanoras. The catholic was painted in 1527 by the famous Cretan painter Theophanis Strelitza. His frescoes are considered one of the most important sets of post-Byzantine painting in Greece. The monastery was restored in the 1960s by the Ephorate of Antiquities.
