Monastery of Zygos | Ouranoupoli

In the region of Ouranoupolis, 40m off the borderline of Mount Athos, we can see the ruins of the former Mount Athos Holy monastery of Zygos. It was dedicated to Prophet Elias and there is a first reference to the monastery in a document of 942. The area within its walls was 5,500m2, while its walls were reinforced with 11 towers. Recent excavation works show that the monastery was built over settlements that dated from the 4th to the 6th centuries BC. The masonry of the monastery is extant to a height of 2-4m. Its marble architectural members, very elaborate works, were looted and the majority of those found were dismembered. The floors of the Catholicon (main church) and the north chapel, decorated with elaborate marble inlays, are works of the 11th century, and they are extant at a satisfactory condition.
