Strymonas river

Of the 392 kilometres of Strymonas, 118 flow in Greek territory. It has its sources in the Vitosha Mountain, southwest of Sofia, at an altitude of 2,200 meters. The Bulgarians call it Stroumia, while at the period of the Turkish occupation its name was Kara-Su. It enters Greece west of Promachonas, between the mountain ranges of Beles and Orvilos, separating its waters in two. At Lithotopos, it reunites its waters and moves within irrigation canals until its intersection with river Aggitis, so that damage from floods can be avoided. Carp, bass, sheatfish, roach and eels enjoy the waters.
