Yahoudi Hamam (Pazar Hamami)

At the intersection of Vasileos Irakliou and Komninon Streets is the Yahudi Hamam, a double bath with separate rooms for men and women. The bath was named ‘Yahudi’, meaning Jewish, because it was located in a Jewish quarter and had as its patrons several Jews of the area. It was also called “Pazar hamam” (bath of the market) because it was located in the commercial centre of the city. It was built in the late 15th to early 16th century by the Turkish official of the Gate, Khalil Agha. It has the typical morphology of hammams with the tripartite arrangement of the cold, lukewarm and hot sections, while decorative reliefs are preserved in several places. It functioned as a bathhouse until the beginning of the 20th century and later the building housed taverns and florists, which is why it is known today as “Louloudadika”. The historic bathhouse was exemplarily restored by the Ministry of Culture and houses cultural events.
