The church of Panagia Kosmosoteira (The Virgin Savour of the World), in Feres, reflects the culture of Constantinople and depicts the high art of the Byzantine capital in 12th century architecture and painting. The elegant dome with its many windows, an earthly imitation of the celestial world, seems to be suspended in the sky. Exceptional 12th-century wall paintings are still extant in its interior, created by painters from Constantinople. Among the military saints, archaeologists identify four figures as members of the Comnenus imperial family. Panagia Kosmosoteira was built in 1152 as the catholicon (central church) of the Vira monastery by Sebastokrator Isaakios Comnenus, son of Emperor Alexios I Comnenus. It was fortified with strong walls and towers, and he also founded the settlement that surrounds the monastery. It is the most important monument of Thrace.
