Feres

Feres is the centre of a region rich in history and natural beauty. Its emblem is the most important monument of Thrace, the Church of the Virgin Mary as World Saviour, or Panayia Kosmosotira. Very close to the Evros Delta Feres is built on the same location as the Byzantine town of Vira, which was founded by Byzantine dignitary Alexios Komninos, around a monastery by the same name. The Church is actually the splendorous main temple of the monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Architectural parts of what used to be the great aqueduct that supplied water to the monastery and the Byzantine town are still visible as you enter Feres.
