The palaeontology museum in Milia was established when bones of a prehistoric elephant that lived 200,000 years ago were found in the area. Since 1990, the Thessaloniki Laboratory of Geology and Palaeontology embarked on an elephant hunt and brought to light 4.4m-long tusks that are unique in the world, and other parts of the huge animal’s skeleton. The most impressive find in the region which is unique worldwide is the jaw of a prehistoric elephant with an estimated weight of 12 tones and a height of 4 or 5 metres. The elephant “knew” Milia 3 million years before we did.
