Church of Megali Panagia | Samarina

The church of Megali Panagia (Great Mother of God) in Samarina, was founded around 1800 according to the inscriptions on the church. A pine-tree grew over the sanctuary. Tradition has it that there was a priest who wanted to cut the tree so that it wouldn’t damage the church with its roots. So, he hired a worker to uproot it, which he did. After forty days the pine-tree sprouted again, while the priest and the worker died. For this reason, the people of Samarina consider the tree sacred.
