Monastery of Osios Nikanoros (Zavorda)

Zavorda monastery was founded in 1534-1544 by Saint Nikanoras and it was dedicated to the Transfiguration. Today, it is called Saint Nikanoras monastery to honour its founder. The catholicon (main church) of the monastery is a work of art; it is made in the Byzantine style and it is filled with icons of exceptional artistic quality. To the north and south of the catholicon there are two chapels, one dedicated to Timios Prodromos (it also hosts the grave of Saint Nikanoras), and the other to Saint Athanasios. The monastery flourished and made a significant property, as we can understand from the Code of Zavorda, that is, a list with the votive offerings to the monastery. In the big cellar we can find two truly huge barrels where the monks used to collect the wine from the surrounding vineyards.
