Byzantine castle of Sidirokastro

The Byzantine Castle of Sidirokastro, also known as Fortress Issari, is located on a hill above the town of Sidirokastro, offering a panoramic view of the Serraikos plain. The name “Issari” comes from the Turkish phrase “Demir Issar”, meaning “Iron Castle”, thus giving the name to the town. The construction of the castle dates back to the 10th century AD, being a typical example of a mountain castle of the time. Its strategic position made it an important fortress for the defence of the region. Visitors can tour the ruins of the castle and enjoy the views it offers.
