Goumenissa

Goumenissa is a small, quiet and picturesque town set at the foot of the beautiful Paiko mountain. It is known for the great quality red wine (xinomavron) and the tsipouro that produces as well as its crystal clear water springs. It is located 40kms away from the town of Kilkis, 75kms from Thessaloniki and just 20kms from the city of Giannitsa. The exporation of Goumenissa can start from the town’s main square with its trademark points such as the fountain, which was constructed by French soldiers during World War 1, the plane trees and the Old Town Hall housed in the building which was once the Greek School. This building is not the only old one in town; 108 houses have been designated as listed buildings and very few show any signs of restoration. The Ethnographic Museum of Goumenissa is another point of interest for those who wish to explore more in depth the history of the place. The Holy Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) was the area’s religious centre during the Ottoman Occupation period. This temple is a typical example of a three-aisled basilica with a polygonal sanctuary arch made of carved stone. The image of the Virgin, which is said to be miraculous, is placed in the shrine of the temple. When finishing visiting the historic spots of the city, follow the road that leads to Mr. Christos Aidarinis, an excellent wine producer of the region. With his trademark little hat, he is happy to welcome his visitors and show them around his mother’s old house where a vast part of the 100-year wine making tradition of his family can be witnessed. On the ground floor there are the fermentation vats and other remains of that large- according to that era standards- home winery. Through Mr. Aidarinis’s stories, it is possible to experience the process of winemaking the way it used be so many years ago.
