Fethiye Mosque | Ioannina

At the highest point of the Acropolis, the Fethiye Mosque with its minaret, which in its present form is the result of a renovation by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century. The original mosque was built in the 17th century by Jalali Pasha, replacing the first religious institution, the Fethiye (=Conquest), which had been erected after the conquest of Ioannina by the Turks in 1430. According to tradition, the mosque is built on the site of the Byzantine church of Taxiarches, from which two small marble columns of the 13th century, built into the niche of the mosque, originate. The mosque has a central hall housed in a large dome, while its interior walls have frescoes with floral and geometric decoration and inscriptions with sayings from the Koran.
