Psarades

A tour of the aquatic paradise of Prespes could not fail to include Psarades. It is a unique Greek village of the Megali Prespa. Until 1928 it was called Nivitsi. A declared traditional settlement, it is located on the southern shores of the lake and at an altitude of 850m. Start with a short stroll through the streets with picturesque houses and continue with a boat ride to the ascetics. Head to the small harbour. From there, local boatmen will take you to the tranquil nature of the lake for a special journey into history and faith. Carved into the steep cliffs around the lake are sites that became hermitages, places of deep contemplation and inner searching for the hermit monks who sought maximum quiet and solitude. You will pass by the ascetics of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, Panagia Eleousa and the Little Ascension, dating back to the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, and discover the special rock paintings. Some of the ascetics are accessible and open to visitors, so don’t miss the opportunity to see them in person. On your way through the lake you will also reach ‘Triethnes’: the water point where the borders of Greece, Albania and North Macedonia meet. Must lunch at the village taverns to enjoy delicious lake fish, cooked uniquely, as only the locals know how. Of course you will accompany them with beans, the nutritional treasure of the region, Florina peppers as well as fine wine and tsipouro from the local wineries.
