Imaret | Kavala

The impressive Muslim complex of Imaret, which housed an alms-house and seminary, was founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha or Mehmet Ali (1769-1848), wali (governor) of the Ottoman Empire in Egypt and founder of the last Egyptian dynasty, who was born in Kavala in 1769. The charitable complex, erected in the period 1817-1821, with various additions until 1864, was a gift from the pasha to his native city. The Imaret educational department functioned until 1902 and its soup kitchen until 1923. It is a traditional style elongated building complex which includes individual rooms, schools, student refectory and soup kitchen for the city’s poorer residents, mosques and auxiliary spaces. The building complex of Imaret belongs to the state of Egypt and was recently restored, respecting the traditional Ottoman architecture and turned into a luxury hotel.
