Siatista

Divided into two districts, Geraneia (lower district) and Chora (upper district), the capital of Voios country, Siatista, still preserves its wonderful mansions and churches which make it so special. There are many versions about the etymology of the word Siatista. Among them, the version which links the etymology of the town name with the German words Shatz (treasure) and Stadt (city). This interpretation coincides with the nickname “Florochori” (village of gold coins) attributed to the town. The settlement of Siatista first appeared in the 15th century AD, and quickly developed into a significant town of Macedonia. Its flourish- economic and intellectual- came in the 17th and 18th centuries, when the commercial centre of the town developed and led to transactions with the major trade centres of the West and Russia. During this period, schools were built, churches with woodcut iconostases, and the renowned mansions with their characteristic wall-paintings. Many of these mansions are preserved in excellent condition and give a special character to Siatista; they are distinguished for their architecture and the high aesthetics of their rich interior décor, with woodcut ceilings and Venetian panes on the windows.
