Church of Dodeka Apostoloi

The Holy Apostles was the central church of a monastery, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1310-1314 by the Patriarch of Constantinople Niphon I. Exquisite mosaics are preserved in the church, while the golden mosaic frescoes were removed by the Turks when the church was converted into a mosque (1520-1530). The mosaics are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art and have themes from the Dodecagoth (Nativity, Baptism, Crucifixion, Resurrection, etc.). In the narthex of the church, fragmentary frescoes have been preserved, dating back to the second decade of the 14th century.
