Arnea

Arnea is a traditional town built on the wooded east side of Mount Holomontas. It was founded in the 16th century around the dependency of Kostamonitis Monastery, and until 1928 it was called Liarigovi. The name Arnea comes from a conflation of the names of the ancient cities, Avgai and Arnai. Arnea, a rich village with famous metallurgists, was full of beautiful stone houses, paved alleys and about 30 stone water fountains. It was burned down in 1821 by the Turks, but quite a few houses of the old village were saved, and they form the listed historic settlement of the present Arnea.
