Polygyros

Polygyros, built at an altitude of 500m, is the capital of the prefecture of Halkidiki. Archaeologists believe that a little to the south of the city was the position of ancient Apollonia. The old village was a dependency of Iviron Monastery and it flourished until the 18th century when it was burned down by the Turks, in 1821.
