Syvota

Syvota

The Syvota group of green islets just off the coast have enclosed bays, while the settlement of the same name on the mainland offers charming restaurants and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The area is known from the naval battle of Syvota that took place there in 433 BC between the Corinthians and Corcyraeans at the start of the Peloponnesian War. It was won by the Corcyraeans with the help of their Athenian allies. The uninhabited islets of Mourtemeno, Mourtos (Mavro Oros) and Agios Nikolaos retain their pristine natural character; the only building is the Mourtos lighthouse from 1884.
