Old Metropolis | Edessa

During the Byzantine era, Edessa was the ecclesiastic and administrative centre of the broader area. An important monument of that era is the Old Metropolis, built in the 14th century. It is a three-aisled basilica with murals that date to around 1380. More recent murals were created in the 17th century, while the wood carved iconostasis was made in the 18th century.
