Town Hall Square | Corfu city

It was the most important, in social terms, square in the years of the Venetians, the meeting point of the local society elite. The Arcade of the Nobles (Loggia dei Nobili), made of Chignon stone, has been operating from the late 17century in the space which now houses the Town Hall. In 1720, the arcade was transformed into the San Giacomo theatre, presenting Italian opera performances for two centuries. The square hosts the church of St Jacob- the Catholic Cathedral- which was built in the late 16th century, destroyed by bombing in World War II and rebuilt in 1970. With restaurants and cafes which, on sunny days, serve at tables outdoors, the Town Hall Square is currently one of the locals’ favourite places for mini-vacations in the heart of the city.
