Macedonian tomps of Derveni

A series of tombs of the Classical and Hellenistic period dating to the last quarter of the 4th century BC were found near Thessaloniki and were named the Derveni Tombs. One is a built Macedonian and the six are ark-shaped, pit-shaped. Their grave goods were gold jewellery, luxurious vases, metal, clay and glass, and iron weapons. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki hosts the most important of the many finds, the “Crater of Derveni”. It is an ossuary and urn that is a typical example of ancient bronze making. It is golden in colour and is thought to be the work of a Macedonian artist influenced by the art of Attica. Dionysos and Ariadne, a couple in a moment of total relaxation. They are flanked by Maenads, male and female figures.
