Monastery of Megalo Meteoro | Meteora

The oldest and largest is the monastery of Great Meteor or Metamorphosis, founded shortly after the middle of the 14th century by Hosios Athanasios the Meteorite. Its second patron is considered to be the former Serbian ruler John Uresis, who became a monk under the name of Joasaph and built the catholic (central church) of the monastery in 1387. The present church of Metamorphosis was built in 1544 and frescoed in 1552, probably by the Cretan painter Tzortzi.
