Over the last few years the old open waterway of the Lithaios has been regulated and beautified with well attended banks, ponds and waterfalls. Its beautiful banks were planted with decorative trees and bushes that create a dense axis of green in the city centre. The Lithaios is not just the son of Lethe, it is also the river of coolness, tranquility and relaxation. An ever present observer of the city’s activity and development is the river Lithaios, which has been quenching its thirst, cooling the city in the summer, washing it clean and which has sometimes drowned people and houses with its swelling waters. Its green waterway has been crossed by locals and foreigners, explorers, conquerors, revolutionaries and liberators, and in nostalgic strolls across its bridges, the residents of Trikala pay homage to the memory and honour their eternal benefactor and city-fellow.
