Archaeological site of Gitani

Gitana or Gitani was the capital of ancient Thesprotia. It was founded in the 4th century BC and destroyed by the Romans in 167 BC. It was surrounded on three sides by the Kalamas River, which in antiquity was navigable from Gitana to the estuary. The city was wealthy and boasted grandiose public buildings and temples. The city’s ancient theatre, with a capacity of 4,500, is located west of the city walls. Findings from ancient Gitana are on display at the Igoumenitsa Archaeological Museum.
