Agios Germanos

Another one of the villages of Prespes worth visiting is Agios Germanos. It is 48 km away from Florina. Built at an altitude of 1,040m above the Megali Prespa and close to the border with North Macedonia, it was once the head village of the region. Wander through the picturesque streets of the village to discover the beauty of the stone houses with traditional architecture. The homonymous Byzantine church of Agios Germanos stands out, dedicated to Germanos, Patriarch of Constantinople. It is a cruciform inscribed with an 11th century dome. A larger church was built next to it in 1882. There is another church in the village, that of Agios Athanasios (17th century). It is worth visiting the Byzantine Collection, an exhibition that focuses on informing the visitor about the history and monuments of the area and is housed in a renovated traditional building of the village. One of the most important attractions of Agios Germanos is the traditional stone watermill, the only one of the 20 watermills in the area that has been fully restored. It was built in 1930 and had a triple use: for grinding grain, washing textiles and the swelling and ‘thickening’ of weavers. In Agios Germanos there is an Information Centre of the Prespa National Park Management Body. It provides information about the natural wealth and cultural values of the Prespa. Also, here you will find a map of the area with hiking trails and birdwatching spots. Those who have a 4X4 car can follow the dirt road that starts from Agios Germanos and ends at the village of Akritas and the Vigla – Pisoderi ski centre. If you are tsipouro lovers, remember that there is a traditional distillery in the village… In Agios Germanos you will also find rooms to let and taverns where you can taste traditional – local – dishes.
