Church of Lady Parigoritissa of Arta

Panagia Parigoritissa is the best-known church in Arta and one of the most important examples of Byzantine art. It was built by Despot of Epirus Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and his wife, Anna, and dates to the mid-13th century. Its unique structure features an octagonal, cross-in-square interior with a two-story ambulatory, while on the outside, it appears as a rectangular cubic structure with five domes, lavishly decorative brickwork and numerous windows. The interior rises to the mosaic representation of Christ Pantocrator in the main dome, offering an unexpected spiritual uplifting. The church currently operates as a museum.
