Komotini

Komotini, built in the centre of Thrace, is the administrative and economic centre of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the seat of the Democritus University with thousands of students who give it the character of a student city. It is a multicultural city as in the last centuries it has been inhabited by Christians and Muslims, while new populations, refugees and returnees have been assimilated into its common urban melting pot. This harmonious progression of the mixed elements of Komotini is reflected in its mosques and churches, in the architecture of its houses and its traditional districts. It is a charming crossroads of cultures where the local Thracian tradition with Balkan and oriental influences are strong. Sightseeing historical monuments from the Byzantine era to the modern centuries and remarkable museums connect the past with the modern city that strongly preserves the traditional atmosphere. Within a short distance and around the city there is a rich natural, historical and monumental environment with beautiful mountains, clean coasts, enchanting lakes, important archaeological sites and interesting settlements. In general, the prefecture of Rodopi, with its rich and long history, its natural beauties, its monuments and museums, its cultural and religious diversity and its varied flavours, is a destination that awaits its visitors to reveal its special secrets all year round.
