Mohammed Ali’s Residence | Kavala

The konaki (house) of Muhammad Ali or Mehmet Ali is located on the north side of the square that bears his name. It was built in the late 18th century (around 1780), it underwent repairs in the early 20th century and is a typical Muslim residence. The konaki is a two-storey building of Balkan architecture with sakhnisia (projections) on the floor and with separate apartments for men and women. The ground floor was a storeroom (cellar) and a stable for the pasha’s horses. Mehmet Ali was not actually born in this house but grew up and lived there during his time in Kavala. In the small house that has been restored and is open to the public as a museum there is also a refreshment bar. The square in front of the house is dominated by an impressive bronze statue of r Muhammad Ali mounted on a horse which was erected in the 1930s. It is the work of the distinguished sculptor Constantinos Dimitriadis and a donation from the Greeks of Egypt to the city of Kavala.
