Monastery of Kipina

Kipina monastery is wedged into the hollow of a tall, vertical rock on the road towards Kalarrytes. This impressive monastic eagle’s nest was founded in 1212. The monastery chapel carved out of the rock is a single-nave basilica with a dome. It dates back to the 17th century, and features wall paintings from the same period. A cave opens up behind the monastery which local inhabitants used as a refuge in hard times.
