Apollonia is among the cities mentioned in the Acts of Apostles. Apostle Paul once preached here. It is said that the sermon took place just outside the village, on a stone, opposite a preserved typical Turkish Bath. Apollonia is located between Thessaloniki and Amphipoli, and close to the Volvi Lake. It was an ancient city of the Macedonian Mygdonia. The city was founded in 432 BC when king Phillip of Macedonia, suggested the place to the Chalkidians who wanted to defect from the Athenians. It was named after the glorious temple of Apollo which adorned the city. In nowadays, its inhabitants work in agriculture as a result of the area’s fertile soil because of its proximity to the Volvi Lake. Fields of maize, wheat, beets and beans can be found next to a lakeside forest. The latter is a haven for different kinds of birds and wildlife.
