Paradise Baths (Bey Hamam)

At the eastern bottom corner of the Ancient Agora Square (Egnatia and Aristotelous Streets) is the largest Ottoman bath in Greece, the Bey Hamam. It is the largest and grandest double bath of Thessaloniki, with separate sections for men and women, and was in use until 1968 under the name “Loutra Paradisos”. It was built with building material from Byzantine churches of the city and other ancient buildings in 1444 by Sultan Murat II, for whom a special area had been set aside. The sultan was best known by the title of Bey, a name that was preserved on his building. The men’s bath complex is arranged in three spacious rooms, the cold and lukewarm sections in two large domed halls, and the warm section having eight small individual compartments with marble troughs, which open around the central marble slab of the massage room. The women’s section has the same three-part layout, but smaller in size, and has a separate entrance. The monument is an archaeological site open to visitors and is occasionally used for artistic events.
