The gold larnakes (ossuaries) with the sixteen-rayed star emblem and the gold wreaths found in the tomb of Philip II. The first one contained the bones of a young woman buried in the antechamber of the tomb and the second one the bones of the Macedonian king, the father of Alexander the Great. The chryselephantine shield of Phillip II, found in the Macedonian king’s tomb, in the Vergina tumulus. The shield, carried by the king during official ceremonies, was assembled from hundreds of small pieces of gold and ivory. The carved, silver and gold faces of mythical figures that decorate vessels and other items found in the Macedonian tombs shed light onto the exceptional Macedonian art during the reign of Alexander the Great.
