Tomb of Judgment

The “Tomb of Judgment” is 9 meters long and 9 meters wide. This tomb with the two chambers and the impressive two-storey fa?ade, is one of the biggest known Macedonian tombs. It possibly belonged to a veteran of Alexander the Great’s expedition who died around 300 BC. The lower part of the fa?ade has two pairs of semicolumns that surround the entrance. In the interstices between columns, we see painted depictions of four monumental figures: the deceased warrior and Hermes Psychopompos, and the judges of the underworld, Aiakos and Rhadamanthys. It is a rare scene for Hellenistic art that must be related to the Orphic teaching that was very popular in Macedonia of the period.
